The singer Preta Gil revealed, this Sunday (16/4), to have recently suffered from septicemia. The doctors suspect that a bacteria has entered his body through the catheter used during treatment against bowel cancer.
“I went through an unforeseen event, a big fright,” Preta said in a video posted on social media. “I really got really bad. There were very difficult and delicate moments, ”she recalled.
Septicemia, also known as sepsis or generalized infection, is the exaggerated inflammation of the body in response to an infection caused by bacteria, fungi or viruses, which leads to changes in the functioning of various organs. This condition is known as multiple organ dysfunction or failure.
“Sepsis is a form of organ dysfunction due to an infection – any one”, says infectologist André Bon, from Hospital Brasília.
Sepsis is considered a medical emergency and treatment should be prioritized. Premature babies, children under one year old, the elderly, alcohol and drug users and hospitalized patients who use antibiotics, catheters or probes are also at greater risk.

The signs and symptoms of sepsis vary according to the cause and severity of the infection, as well as the patient’s condition. In general, they include fever above 38°C, rapid breathing, low blood pressure, fainting, mental confusion and decreased amount of urine.
Preta said that, on March 22, after feeling unwell at home, the doctors asked her to go to the hospital. At first, it was believed that she was suffering from dehydration, but the next day she suffered septic shock caused by a bacteria.
“There are some possibilities to explain how this bacteria got into my body. The most latent is that it was through my catheter. Doctors think it might have been that way,” he says. Exams on the equipment found that the bacteria was also present in it.
Treatment
The first hours of treatment are the most important. Health professionals recommend intervention with antibiotics as soon as possible. Preta said she had suffered some sequelae from the condition, one of them in her lungs. The organ is being treated. She will undergo another three weeks of rehabilitation before being able to return to cancer treatment, which was interrupted due to sepsis.
