Pro-government candidate promises no more displaced by violence in southern Mexico

Mexico City, Aug 2 (EFE).- The candidate for the presidential candidacy in Mexico of the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena) Adán Augusto López promised this Wednesday that “never again” there will be peoples displaced by violence in the south of the country, where indigenous inhabitants are victims of organized crime.

“It’s not worth it, and ending this is our commitment, that never again will a town be displaced by another brother town, not under the pretext of violence, insecurity, crime or social demands,” López said during an event in the southern state of Chiapas.

The statements by the former Secretary of the Interior come amid complaints from indigenous and civil organizations that Chiapas and a large part of the country are submerged in an armed conflict that causes alerts due to the growing intensity of criminal cartels and the militarization processes.

The native peoples known as “zapatistas” have denounced that they suffer from an environment marked by fear and terror, while they struggle to achieve peace.

“We cannot allow entire towns to continue being displaced. It is dignity and justice for all of you,” said the Mexican presidential candidate before residents of the state.

Likewise, he promised that in Chiapas “never again” there will be marginalization, abandonment, neither for the population in general nor for the original peoples.

López offered to work “without fainting” so that “never again will there be displaced peoples under any pretext, neither here in Chiapas nor in any part of Mexico.”

The former Secretary of the Interior, considered the closest to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, usually appears in third place in the Morena polls, which will define its presidential candidate for the 2024 elections on September 6.

López pointed out that the Fourth Transformation, as López Obrador has defined his project, “seeks to maintain, preserve and strengthen the peoples with their ancient culture and traditions.”

He recalled that no indigenous person has ever won a lawsuit against a rich man defending his “piece” of land.

“But that is going to end and next year you will have the decision to change everything,” he asserted.

Since last June, the former official, along with five other candidates for the Morena candidacy, began political tours of the country towards the definition of the ruling party’s candidate for the 2024 elections.

In the internal process, it was agreed that the applicants will complete tours until August 27.

After the tours, the surveys will begin, from August 28 to September 3. Between September 4 and 6, the results will be processed and the candidate will be revealed on September 6.

In the contest, the best positioned are the former head of the Government of Mexico City Claudia Sheinbaum and the former chancellor Marcelo Ebrard. EFE
