Problems with communications system causes delays at all DC airports

Problems with a communications system caused flights at all of the region’s airports to be delayed or briefly diverted on Sunday.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported in a tweet that it had paused departures to DC airports – including Baltimore International Airport (BWI) and Richmond International Airport (RIC) – while was completing repairs to a communications system at the Potomac Terminal Radar Approach Control facility.

Flights from the West Coast, Midwest and Florida to airports in the region resumed around 6:45 p.m. All other flights resumed around 7 p.m.

The incident “had nothing to do with any of the facilities at our airports,” said the Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority (MWAA).

It was not immediately known what caused the problem with the communications system. The FAA said there were no reports of a fire.

This is a developing story.
