In Northern Ireland, participants in an undeclared march attacked a police car on Monday. In Londonderry, which is only called Derry by the Catholic-Republican part of the population, Molotov cocktails were thrown at the police van, a police spokesman said.

Flames could be seen around the vehicle. According to initial information, no one was injured. Members of Republican splinter groups had gathered for the march.

In the past few days, the Northern Irish police had already warned of attacks on police officers on Easter Monday. Northern Ireland commemorated on Monday the end of the decades-long civil war 25 years ago with the Good Friday Agreement of April 10, 1998. At that time, mostly Catholic supporters of a unification of the two parts of Ireland and predominantly Protestant supporters of the union with Great Britain fought each other. About 3700 people lost their lives. More than 47,000 were injured.

The 25th anniversary of the agreement fell on Easter Monday, which is a traditional day of protest for the republican camp anyway – based on the Easter uprising of Irish republicans in 1916, with which they wanted to force Ireland’s independence from Great Britain.

US President Joe Biden is expected in Belfast on Tuesday evening to pay tribute to the peace agreement and the progress made since then. (dpa)
