Three passengers die in a bus crash in Pennsylvania

The crash occurred in heavy rain around 11:50 p.m. Sunday on southbound Interstate 81 in the Lower Paxton township of Dauphin County, near Harrisburg, according to state police. The bus hit a side barrier, hit the rear of a car and came to rest on its side.

“Three passengers were certified dead at the scene,” the police report said. There were other injured, who had minor to severe injuries.

No names were released.

“This is considered a mass casualty incident,” said Trooper Megan Frazer. “We have eight ambulances that assisted us, as well as (emergency personnel) due to the number of people involved and the number of injuries.”

At the time of the incident, it was raining heavily, Frazer said in statements collected by WHTM-TV.

Several people were taken to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center with injuries, though police did not immediately provide further details. A message was sent to the hospital Monday asking for comment.

The American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania provided food, drink and cots at the Chambers Hill Fire Department for passengers released from the hospital. When asked how many people it was serving, the Red Cross indicated that “the situation is still evolving” and could not give a number yet.
