When it was announced, the massive size and atypical design of the PS5 surprised everyone. Imposing and curvaceous, Sony’s monster has taken up considerable space next to our screens for more than two years now. This is also why the Japanese manufacturer thought of offering players the possibility of putting it vertically or horizontally. And if so far Sony says there is no problem to put it one way or the other, after-sales service around the world is not of this opinion.
Pay attention to your console
In fact, putting your console in an upright position could well cost your PS5 its life. According to several experts, in France as elsewhere, a manufacturing defect could cause heavy damage to the PS5 when it is vertical. Blame it on the liquid metal used to cool the machine’s CPU. It happens that this precious liquid escapes from its location because of a small defect and by physics, ends up flowing on the circuits placed below, as this English-speaking technician points out on Twitter:
I am just warning, on all PS5s that I open, very often the liquid is displaced and can sometimes damage the surface of the CPU. In some cases, this affects operation. I’m not the only Technician to notice this.
If the problem comes back today, it is not new. On social networks, a French repairman had already sounded the alarm bells months before by raising the exact same problem.
This does not mean that the vertical position will necessarily kill your console, it all depends on the design, but we now know that if we have the choice, it may be better to put it horizontal history of reduce risks.
