Amherst, Massachusetts is now under a public health advisory after sewage was discharged into the Connecticut River.

More than 400,000 gallons of partially treated sanitary wastewater was released Thursday from the Amherst Wastewater Treatment Plant, according to WWLP reports.

The city now recommends that the public avoid swimming in the area of the Calvin Coolidge Bridge and the South Hadley city line of the Connecticut River until Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.

Authorities clarified that the incident does not affect the town’s drinking water.

Wastewater is considered partially treated because it is required to be chlorinated before it is discharged, and this was not the case on this occasion.
