Resident has problems to repair paint on his car at a Toyota dealer by factory defect

A viewer spent years driving a car with peeling paint due to factory defects until NBC New England Responds was able to help him.

As it turns out, the paint was recalled, and although the manufacturer offered to repaint vehicles with this issue, Leida González had no luck scheduling her appointment for her Rav4 at a local dealership.

She says that since 2019 the paint on the car began to peel, to peel everywhere, “I was already ashamed to ride in it,” said González.

The problem seems to have been so recurring that Toyota sent a letter to customers, where it says the following:
“Toyota has received reports regarding peeling paint on certain vehicles with the original factory applied blizzard pearl or super white paint colors…if you have experienced this condition, contact any authorized Toyota dealer….”

When Leida brought her car to the Toyota dealership in Watertown, Massachusetts, “they would take a picture of the car, they would take my e-mail and they would never write back,” she said.

Leida says that she asked for a quote from some workshops to fix it out of pocket, but the price exceeded her spending capabilities.

So he decided to call NBC Nueva Inglaterra Responde, and our team sent the images of the paint loss along with the company’s advisory letter to the Toyota Watertown dealership, and they responded.

“Since I called Telemundo, Toyota immediately answered me…the thing is that they painted my car and they gave it to me new and I am more than grateful to Telemundo.” Leida said.

A statement was requested from Toyota Watertown, but they offered no comment.

The Peeling White Paint Notice includes the following Toyota models:

  • 2008-2015 4runner
  • 2008-2017 Avalon, Camry
  • 2009 – 2019 Corolla
  • 2009-2017 RAV4

The first repair request period expired in December, but is still applicable for 10 years until the date of first use of the vehicle, regardless of mileage.
