The Los Angeles City Library Network offers a summer reading program that awards prizes to those who read the most books.

“Summer with the Library” is available at all 72 Los Angeles City Library branches.

“It is a program for all ages so that they can read, complete activities, have fun as a family, but at the same time, win prizes during the summer,” said Madeline Peña, community affairs manager for the Los Angeles Public Library.

Loans are offered at five of the county’s libraries including Compton, Lancaster, Norwalk, Rosemead and San Fernando.

Readers earn badges for reading and completing learning activities. By accumulating 15 of them, they have the opportunity to participate in raffles for various prizes.

More than 16,000 people were part of this program last summer and 14 were winners of prizes after the raffle that takes place at the end of the challenge.

“The prizes are $50 gift cards, gift certificates to buy bikes and their helmets, iPads and a family pass to visit Universal Studios,” Peña said.

Peña stresses that the most important thing is to have fun.

(Most importantly) is getting to know Los Angeles well, which is the theme of this year’s ‘Summer with the Library,’ featuring art by artist Brenda Chi.

To participate, those interested must obtain a Los Angeles Library card and register on the library’s website, by clicking here.

Progress can be monitored through the app Beanstack Tracker or printing a game board.
