Puebla (Mexico), May 5 (EFE).- The central Mexican state of Puebla celebrated the 161st anniversary of the Battle of May 5, with a civic-military parade through the main streets of the city, to remember this heroic deed.

At 11:00 a.m. local time (4:00 p.m. GMT) the honors to the flag began in which President Andrés Manuel López Obrador participated, together with the governor of Puebla, Sergio Salomón Céspedes, as well as authorities from the three levels of government.

At the end, the civic-military parade began with the participation of 5,943 members of the armed forces and the National Guard, 35 educational institutions, 12,750 children and adults belonging to the schools, 76 vehicles, 256 horses, 70 charros and 15 floats.

During the tour, the members of the armed and naval forces were the most applauded and cheered by the spectators, for seeing them in their dress uniforms, the exclusive army vehicles and weapons, when the contingent of Plan DN-III passed by, the people they shouted “thank you!”, due to the hundreds of times, they said, that they have supported Mexicans in cases of natural or man-made emergencies.

After them the school contingents began, in which the students wore their most elegant costumes, others dressed as Mexican charros, butterflies, costumes used by the Aztec culture, huipiles and traditional clothing of the indigenous peoples of Puebla.

The allegorical cars appeared in which they represented the battle against the French Army that was defeated by the Zacapoaxtlas and Xochiapulcas, inhabitants of the region of the municipality of Zacapoaxtla, some represented the gate of Fuerte de Guadalupe that is located in the historic area of ​​the city .

The attendees had their own party on the banks where chairs or stands were located, where they drank water, ate sweets and lived with family or groups of friends.

While they waited for the passage of the participants, they listened to music on portable speakers to pass the hours they were waiting, since most of them arrived at 06:00 local time (11:00 GMT) this Friday.

The Battle of May 5, which took place in 1862, was one of the most representative battles in the history of Mexico, because the sovereignty and dignity of the Mexicans were defended against the second invasion of the French Army who wanted to invade the territory. national, which caused the people to rise up in arms under the command of General Ignacio Zaragoza, who sought to beat the professional army of the Second French Empire, led by Charles Ferdinand Latrille.

It was on May 5 when the Mexican Army with the Zacapoaxtlas and Xochiapulcas raised their fists as a symbol of victory, becoming a symbol of sovereignty and national independence, which contributed to the construction of the identity of the Mexican people.
