In three years, more than 200,000 euros have disappeared from the bank account of a nonagenarian who is visually impaired and in a wheelchair. Justice suspects his life assistant of having embezzled this money. She will be tried next July.

A nonagenarian stripped of more than 220,000 euros in three years? Such suspicions have in any case led to the opening of an investigation in Salies-de-Béarn, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, reports France Blue. A 55-year-old carer was taken into custody on January 23 for “breach of trust” on one of her patients, aged 95.

The 50-year-old is suspected of having stolen 223,000 from her since 2023, or 74,000 euros per year. According to our colleagues, the suspect had access to the credit card and checkbook of the elderly lady, visually impaired and in a wheelchair. To date, all of the embezzled money has already been spent on renovations to his home or vehicle purchases.

Failure to respect the rules of labor law?

Questioned by France Bleu, the lawyer for the carer, Me Thierry Sagardoytho, explains that his client was “employed day and night, without any day off and in conditions completely contrary to the minimum rules of the labor code”.

Presented to a judge at the end of his police custody, the mis en cause was referred to the criminal court and will be tried next July. In the meantime, she has been placed under judicial supervision.
