Chihuahua, Chih.- After the confirmation of a case of contagion of rabies by a domestic cat to a woman, the veterinarian Marylin Parada stressed that it is important to promote a culture of vaccination in domestic cats against this disease that, she recalled, is not found eradicated, since it is only controlled and animals, especially in rural areas, are the most likely to contract it due to their proximity to species such as bats, rats or squirrels that are carriers of this disease and do not have clinical signs.

“That is why it is emphasized that our animals must be vaccinated annually and in the mountainous area it should be every six months. So it’s not that rabies has been eradicated, those are myths, rabies is only controlled in certain areas. We are seeing it and it is important to have greater control with the animals ”, he highlighted.

He added that an animal infected with rabies dies after a week, and in conditions that become very painful, and when the animal is diagnosed, it is sacrificed.

Currently in Chihuahua there have been no cases of rabies, because, according to the veterinarian, the Ministry of Health maintains good control with anti-rabies campaigns twice a year, for which reason she called on the population to be aware and apply Vaccines in dogs and cats.

He considered that, however, this has occurred in the urban area, however something that could contribute to the occurrence of cases is the overpopulation of animals. “You have to take into account what is happening in other states to carry out strategies and that a case like that does not occur here,” she pointed out.
