In 2012, the first section radar in France was born a few kilometers from Besançon. Since then, a hundred more of these devices have been put into service on some 4,500 radars in France.

According to our colleagues from 20 Minutes taken over by The voice of the North, radar sections could soon “be a distant memory in a few years”. This security system, which makes it possible to measure the average speed of a vehicle between two fixed points, would obviously be too unprofitable.

They would be replaced by automatic radars, more classic but above all more effective, believes the association 40 million motorists. These section devices would flash only 5,000 motorists per year compared to 14,000 for more traditional radars. The association highlights the race for profitability of Road Safety which should still collect more than 332 million euros in 2023 thanks to its fleet of radars.

A controversy over the cost

According to information obtained by our colleagues, there is officially no question of the effectiveness of these radars for road safety. The latter would mainly quote the cost of maintaining and repairing these machines, some of which would already need to be replaced.

Philippe Nozière, president of the association, stepped up to the plate: “Officially, road safety therefore justifies their progressive replacement by another type of radar by a lower economic cost… But it is actually more the profitability of these devices that worries the authorities. They just don’t actually generate enough money from tickets!”.

A new radar from 2025?

Pierre Chasserey, general delegate of the association, considers that the replacement of the section radars is “proof that the radars are not there to ensure the safety of users, but rather to pick the pockets of motorists”. By replacing these few hundred section radars, the number of flashed motorists should therefore increase significantly.

Our colleagues fromcar plus believe, however, that Road Safety would work on a new surveillance system, similar to section radars, “less expensive but it should not see the light of day for several years”. To be continued…
