There is a crisis in the Danish royal family: In her New Year’s speech, Queen Margrethe II openly commented on the dispute with her youngest son Prince Joachim. The reason for this is likely to be the title withdrawal that she ordered in September 2021.

Copenhagen – For Queen Margrethe II (82) there was an important tradition at the turn of the year: in her New Year’s message, the monarch, who came from the house of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, addressed the nation as usual – and openly spoke about the discrepancies within to her own family.

Queen Margrethe II addresses family dispute – disagreement with son Joachim

It’s no secret that the relationship between Margrethe II and her youngest son, Prince Joachim of Denmark (53), is ailing. The 82-year-old didn’t even try to keep up appearances during her speech, which was broadcast on Saturday evening (December 31), but addressed the people with honest words.

“It hurts me that the relationship with Prince Joachim and his wife Princess Marie got into trouble,” Margrethe II said openly. According to the regent, the “entire country” had “witnessed” the disagreements within the royal family. Nevertheless, she was hopeful: 2023 they want to commit “together with trust, understanding and new courage”.

Denmark’s monarch Margrethe II is also queen of cigarettes:

Margrethe II is considered an avid smoker and is said to have once enjoyed around 60 cigarettes a day – sometimes even in public! But in 2007 Denmark introduced an anti-smoking law; the queen went along, gnashing her teeth, and now does without the fags during performances. Privately, however, puffing should continue at Amalienborg Palace. The media sometimes even dubbed the 82-year-old the “Vulcan Queen” because of her habit.

After Queen Margrethe II revoked his title, Joachim’s children would no longer be princes

The trigger for the family dispute is a controversial decision that Queen Margrethe II made in September 2022. According to the order, four of her eight grandchildren will lose their titles at the turn of the year – officially to enable them to lead a normal, self-determined life. This decision also affects the four children from Prince Joachim’s two marriages.

In the future, they will no longer hold the title of prince or princess. Nikolai zu Denmark (23), Margrethe II’s eldest grandson, had already publicly expressed his disappointment at this step. His grandmother’s plan is to streamline the monarchy and make it more modern. But other (ex) royals also made headlines at the end of the year: Prince Harry (38) is said to have an “absolutely tasteless” deck of cards about the Queen.
