Relief: Basic child security: What support should come

The federal government is planning a fundamental reform of family support in Germany. Instead of the current child benefit, from 2025 a Basic child security be introduced. But which cornerstones are planned and what will change for families?

What is basic child security?

The basic child security is a project of the traffic light coalition, which is a comprehensive family support should represent, which is not only oriented to financial needs. How much money are families entitled to?

The state currently grants a child benefit of 250 euros per month for every child up to the end of their first training or studies at the age of 25. In future, instead of child benefit, it should be paid an equal “guarantee amount” as basic child security. This amount is increased by a graduated additional amount to support children in poor families. The guaranteed amount should at least correspond to the amount of child benefit and the maximum relief due to the child allowance of 354 euros per month. If the children move out, the money will be paid directly paid to them and then used to finance their studies and training.

How do I apply for basic child security?

In the future, a central Child support office set up to serve as a contact for all matters. As part of this initiative, an online platform is to be created through which parents can submit applications. By comparing data with the tax authorities and pension insurance, the child protection office should be able to automatically notify families after a “child protection check” whether they are entitled to additional support.

When will the first basic child security be paid out?

It will take some time before basic child security is paid out for the first time. First of all, the cornerstones are to be decided in the cabinet in February. Then the legislative process begins.
