Renault boss Fabrice Cambolive confirms that the Renault Zoe will not have a direct successor. The group will discontinue the model. This ends an era in which the small electric car was at times the best-selling electric car in Europe.

That now reports that Online magazine Autocar. A final date for the end of its production has not yet been set, but that could change soon according to the latest announcement.

Hybrid and electric models should coexist at Renault in the foreseeable future. Renault boss Cambolive told Autocar: “It depends on the market. If a market is all-electric, that’s fine, but most markets will have all-electric models in the compact segment and by 2035 we will also have Clio and Clio if necessary Captur. They will have hybrid technology because that is our solution, the technological choice that we have made to replace the normal internal combustion engine.”

No direct successor planned

The group is therefore planning to stamp out the Zoe without a direct successor. Now that it’s been on the market since 2012, it’s time for facelifts. So far, however, it was more likely that there would be a revised new edition. Instead, the Renault Clio and Renault Captur will continue to complement Renault’s new small electric car range, to be led by the Renault 4 and 5, both of which will be launched by 2025. “We have said that in this ‘renovation phase’ we will make more sales per unit. That is why we have decided to focus on our product range in the C segment,” says Cambolive. “We’re going to be launching the Mgane shortly, followed by the Scenic. And then we’re going to move onto the compact segment.”

The decision to discontinue the Zoe ends a lifetime of more than a decade in which it was the best-selling electric car in Europe for two consecutive years (2015 and 2016) and sold more than 100,000 units in France alone.
