A study by Australian doctors with more than 8,800 patients showed that including cranberry in eating habits can help prevent urinary tract infections, both in women and children.

Carried out by Flinders University, in Australia, the research showed that the consumption of cranberry juice, dried fruit or capsules reduced the recurrence of symptoms of urinary infection in 25% of the volunteers. In children, use reduced the problem by 50%.

“Almost a third of women face urinary tract infections and among older women the problem is even more frequent, so finding ways to alleviate these symptoms is essential,” said study leader, physician Gabrielle Williams, in a press release.

Response to previous study

For the research, 50 studies were analyzed that analyzed the consumption of fruit juice or cranberry supplement as adjuvants in the treatment of urinary infections. With this review, doctors were able to refute previous research that classified the use of fruit against urinary infections as a myth.

“With this systematic review, we managed to prove, with more solid data, that the truth always comes out”, emphasized Williams. The doctor had a personal history with the use of cranberry juice, as her mother, since the 1970s, used the drink for this purpose.

“I had told my mother that the scientific evidence said that the juice did not help, but she did not listen to me. As always, my mother was right. Cranberry products can indeed prevent women from having urinary tract infections,” she added.

Contraindications

Not all the news, however, is positive. The data collected by the study indicate that pregnant women, the elderly and people with urinary retention are not directly benefited by the use of cranberry.

“It is also important to clarify that some people had side effects from excessive cranberry consumption, especially abdominal pain,” said the researcher.

Although research shows the benefits of using the fruit, it has not been possible to determine the amount that should be ingested or the frequency needed to obtain the benefit.
