The mayor of Cénac, in Gironde, published an open letter to the head of state in which she explains to give him his scarf “in solidarity” with the resigning mayor. His home had been targeted by fire.

An act of support. The various left mayor of the town of Cénac, in Gironde, Catherine Veyssy, returned her tricolor scarf, symbolizing her mandate, to Emmanuel Macron as a sign of support for the resigning mayor of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, in Loire-Atlantique. She explains her gesture in an open letter to the Head of State, published Thursday on her social networks.

“In solidarity with the mayor of Saint-Brevin-Les-Pins, I give you my tricolor scarf”, she announces.

“I am (…) deeply upset by the resignation of Yannick Morez, mayor of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins. I do not know him personally, but nevertheless I endorse his words and his dismay”, affirms- She.

The home of the mayor of Saint-Brevin Yannick Morez was burned down last March, while he was there with his wife. The elected official had been the subject of threats for several months because of his support for the project to set up a reception center for migrants in the town. He resigned this week, lamenting a “lack of state support”.

“A mandate of extreme solitude”

In this letter, the elected official considers that the resignation of the mayor of Saint-Brevin constitutes a “failure of the Republic”. “It should not be trivialized. The discomfort is deep. The mental load is heavy”, she underlines.

Among the grievances she outlines, the mayor of Cénac deplores the “ever greater responsibilities” incumbent on local elected officials, the difficulty in responding to requests from citizens “always more demanding, always more individualistic”, or even the management of a team of elected officials “frustrated” by the requirements imposed.

As these difficulties multiply, the city councilor believes that he must also face a “disintegration of the state’s relationship with the mayors”.

“The reality of the daily exercise of the mayor’s mandate goes beyond anything anyone can imagine until they have experienced it personally. It is an extremely lonely mandate. (…) We are the outcasts of the Republic”, she confides.

“Upset”

On France Blue Gironde, Catherine Veyssy said this Friday “deeply upset” by the threats and the fire that targeted the mayor of Saint-Brevin. “What touched me was the violence he suffered and this feeling of extreme loneliness he felt,” she told the local media.

“Each time a local elected official is affected, it is the republic that is affected,” she believes.

Borne promises to “better protect” elected officials

Mayor Catherine Veyssy hopes that with the resignation of the mayor and his gesture will raise awareness.

“It’s sad to come to this end so that everyone says to themselves: ‘but the daily life of a mayor is still very complicated!'”, she laments.

The announcement of the resignation of the councilor of Loire-Atlantique sparked a wave of indignation within the political class this week, Emmanuel Macron notably assured the elected official of his support, while Élisabeth Borne promises to ” better protect” elected officials. The mayor has announced that he will leave the town next June where he has lived for more than 30 years.
