Even though there is a Law for protect health of the pregnant person, the percentage of caesarean sections in Argentina is more than double from the one suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO)as warned from the Hospital of Clinics After analyzing the data collected by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires. In the Respected Childbirth Weekthat is held between May 14 and 20the specialists highlighted the importance of build a bond of trust for a better experience.

In the country, respected childbirth is framed in the Law 25,929which dates from 2004. This regulation highlights a change in the way of attentionprioritizing the needs of the patient based on two fundamental pillars: listening to your desires and the information on each medical action. This allows you to keep your physical integrity and psychic and promote the I respectavoiding, above all, exercising the obstetric violencewhich more frequently affects older people youths and of lower sociocultural level.

Beyond this legal framework, there are various indicators that warn of the need to continue working intersectorally to improve the health of the pregnant person and the newborn. Some of them are the “medicalization abuse, the pathologization of natural processes and a high percentage of caesarean sections: according to the WHO, the ideal farrowing rate through this type of intervention should oscillate between a 10% and fifteen%, although according to disseminated information for him GCBA, in Argentina it is around 35%”, they pointed out from the Hospital de Clínicas in a statement.

The foundation of a respected childbirth implies the consent of the pregnant person from the first medical consultation that it takes until the moment of postpartum, inclusive. The key to its operation is to create an area in which the patient feels free to express their needs and the health professional can explain the medical acts to be carried out and inform about any risk that may arise, as explained by the Obstetrics area of the Hospital of Clinics of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA).

In that tone, the doctor Evangelina Morganti (MN 124282), a doctor from the Obstetrics service at the Hospital de Clínicas de UBA, said: “It is key to generate a bond of trust to create an environment in which the pregnant person feels free to say what their needs are and the health professional can explain both the medical acts to be carried out, as well as inform any risk that may arise during the birth process. In this way, it will be possible to accept and understand the decision-making by health personnel in emergency situations or illness.

The aforementioned national Law contemplates not only the experience at the time of giving birth, but also during pregnancy and the postpartum period. In turn, this regulation covers the pregnant person-newborn binomial with the purpose of promoting optimal conditions for that first contact. Therefore, the relationship of respect must begin at the first pregnancy consultation and be maintained throughout all check-ups.

According to what was reviewed from the Argentine Society of Pediatrics (SAP)Until the 19th century, the birth of a person was an event that occurred in the family environment of homes and in the community, often with the assistance of trained women together with the support of the pregnant person’s affective and family networks.

With the passage of time, scientific and technological evolution allowed care for possible complications. Under these precepts, the institutionalization of childbirth has been in all the countries of the world the public health measure with the greatest impact to achieve the reduction of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, but it entails the responsibility of striving not to stop placing in the center of attention to those who are the protagonists of this unique and unrepeatable event in the life of the human being. Taking care of births is, then, taking care of families and positioning them in the best starting point for sensitive and loving upbringing.

Regarding the time of delivery, some doctors suggest that their patient make a birth plan. “It is a document that the pregnant person must carry out in which the needs, expectations and preferences of her in relation to the moment of birth are stated. In this way, under the patients’ right to ‘advance directives’, the aim is to guarantee their active participation”, explained Dr. Morganti.

Ideally, it should be presented in advance at the institution where it is decided to carry out the birth, with a copy stamped by the heads of the Obstetrics and Neonatology service and the attending obstetrician.

According to what was recorded by the Obstetrics service at the Hospital de Clínicas de la UBA, there is a high percentage of patients with some type of obstetric pathology that may involve risks, so many of the decisions are made by health professionals. . In relation to emergencies, Morganti stated: “It is important to note that as obstetricians we must guarantee health. Therefore it is essential to be able to work within an institutional framework that guarantees a prompt response to any complication, informing with respect”.
