Rewe and Deutsche Bahn are cooperating on the pilot project “shopping bus” together. In a pilot phase, starting in the spring, a bus will be supplying food to several communities in northern Hesse. The two companies tried something similar in 2021 already in the form of a supermarket train. Rewe and DB are now testing the local supply in rural areas with the shopping bus. They want to make it possible to offer a supermarket on site, so fewer people are likely to drive to the nearest supermarket by car. The supermarket ends up right in front of the front door.

The shopping bus is 18 meters long. The supermarket on wheels should contain a complete range. These are 700 different products that a regular supermarket offers. In addition to fresh fruit and vegetables, there are also refrigerated products, fresh goods, beverages and cosmetics. The range also includes regional goods and fair trade and organic products. The bus has of course been rebuilt for this purpose. Compared to a regular bus, this carries additional air conditioning and high-performance batteries, which operate the market for up to eight hours without an external power supply.

The roles of Rewe and the DB subsidiary DB Regio Bus Mitte should be easily clarified. DB takes over driving operations and maintenance. I already mentioned at the beginning that it is hoped that private car journeys will be reduced as a result. As part of the pilot phase, the shopping bus will be used at fixed times in several communities in the districts of Kassel, Schwalm-Eder and Waldeck-Frankenberg.
