We recently reported that Mortal Kombat 12 will most likely be released later this year. But now there is speculation about the beating series again: According to the latest rumors, Netherrealm Studios, the makers of Mortal Kombat, are working on a reboot of the successful game series. This is indicated by both a cryptic hint from the creator of the series, Ed Boon, and a very detailed leak…

New Mortal Kombat will reboot the series

A rumor is making the rounds on Twitter that it has been spread by the well-known leaker “billbil-kun”, who is notorious for numerous previous leaks. Accordingly, the announcement of a reboot of the successful Mortal Kombat fighting game series is imminent. The name of the reboot should be Mortal Kombat 1, a release is planned for this year.

According to the leaker, the game will be released for PC, PS5, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch, but there are probably no plans for the last-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One. The leaker also supposedly knows details about the prices and a possible collector’s edition. The version for the next-gen consoles will cost €69.99, but the switch version will be €10 cheaper, i.e. it will only cost €59.99.

In addition to a premium edition for €109.99 with unknown content, there will also be a so-called “Kollector’s” edition, which will put a mere €249.99 in your wallet. Of course, all these rumors should be viewed with a certain amount of skepticism because they have not yet been officially confirmed or denied.

Mortal Kombat 12 is actually imminent

The rumors are also interesting because just a few weeks ago it was announced during a conference call by Warner Bros Discovery (which also includes the developer studio behind Mortal Kombat) that Mortal Kombat 12 should be released later this year. The number “12” was explicitly mentioned in this context.

On Twitter, however, a mysterious tweet from “Mortal Kombat” creator Ed Boon also caused speculation: he asked if anyone knew what time it was. Below the question you can see a short video in which a clock hand ticks from 9 to 1 o’clock but omits 12. Accordingly, this could be a hint that Mortal Kombat 12 will be skipped and “continue” directly with Mortal Kombat 1.

It doesn’t matter what the game’s name is and whether it’s a reboot or a sequel, one thing’s for sure: this year there’s a high probability of a new entry in the “Mortal Kombat” series awaiting us. And even well-known superheroes could have an appearance in it. Would you be happy about that? Or can you not do anything with fighting games?
