The last few weeks at the box office have been firmly in the hands of a plumber with Italian roots and a penchant for relentless stomping attacks. The Super Mario Bros film has now broken the magic mark of 1 billion US dollars in sales and is considered a terrific success. As expected, however, the Nintendo hero has lost its top position in the cinema charts since last weekend. The 32nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe easily took #1.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, filmmaker James Gunn puts a final touch on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Once he landed in 2014 as relative unknown filmmaker a surprise hit with the first part. After the second part in 2017, he was suspended from Marvel due to distasteful older tweets. Now that he’s been pardoned, James Gunn is making a bold statement with the conclusion of the Guardians trilogy before he dives into his new role as DC strongman full-time.

James Gunn is an idiosyncratic filmmaker who also likes to face his audience on social media. For example, he responded to allegations that he preferred his wife in castings. He also had to endure derogatory comments about his cat posted on Twitter.
Recently, James Gunn apparently threw a very special one on the spur of the moment “Ask Me Anything” on twitter. “I have a few minutes to answer questions. 1. They must be questions that you can relate to Yes or no and 2. it must be questions about Guardians of the Galaxy 3″. In this wonderful thread James Gunn offers some interesting insights into the production of the blockbuster.
Among other things, James Gunn was asked if he had spoken to Disney about the future of the Guardians. He answered this with one tight “yes”. To the related further question, whether it ever Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 will be given, he answered clearly and unequivocally with “No”.
With that he grants speculation about a possible another movie with the remaining Guardians a clear rejection. On the one hand, this is of course not surprising, since James Gunn sees his professional future in the competition from DC. On the other hand, there is theoretically the possibility that Disney is planning a new Guardians film without the filmmaker. According to James Gunn, that doesn’t seem to be the case either.
