Samsung still didn’t have a device to control and manage smart homes, the SmartThings Station came to close that gap in the company. Samsung’s differential promise is integration with its devices quickly and efficiently, in addition to a lot of technology employed, including Matter, the protocol that becomes standard for automation of smart devices.

“A smarter home shouldn’t be complicated or expensive. That’s why our goal with the SmartThings Station was to create a smart home hub that is simple to use, reliable and expandable,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Lead from Samsung Electronics’ SmartThings Device Platform Center. “The number of devices in a connected home continues to grow, especially in light of the recent launch of the Matter standard. We are proud to play our part in making this exciting technology easier to adopt.”

Samsung promises that it will be easy to configure everything with SmartThings, when you turn it on for the first time, a pop-up appears on your Samsung cell phone – it was not reported whether cell phones from another brand will have this functionality. Just click on the popup and continue with the settings.

A smart home usually needs a few basic components to function, including:

  • A home automation system to control connected devices and manage home settings.
  • Smart devices such as light bulbs, outlets, thermostats and motion sensors to monitor and control various aspects of the home.
  • An internet connection to allow the smart devices to communicate with each other and with the home automation system.
  • A control device such as a smartphone, tablet or now the SmartThings Station allows you to access and control your home’s smart devices from anywhere.

routines

SmartThings Station makes it easy to automate predefined routines created through the SmartThings mobile app, without requiring users to manually control individual devices. By pressing the Smart Button on the SmartThings Station, users can activate a routine created in their SmartThings app. For example, at bedtime, a quick tap can trigger a sleep routine – which can turn off the lights, close the blinds and lower the temperature.

device tracking

SmartThings Station is also integrated with Samsung’s SmartThings Find, an increasingly popular device tracking service. By scanning devices, SmartThings Station will inform users the location of connected smart devices or tags in the home and share an alert on the user’s smartphone when a tag or device leaves or returns home.

SmartThing Station is a wireless charger too

In addition to controlling the home, SmartThings Station is also a charger supporting up to 15W wireless charging. The idea is good, the product is just sitting there, nothing better than throwing another device on top of it and it’s already charging. You can configure it to receive an alert as soon as the cell phone, watch or any product you put on charge completes the charge.

Technology is the differential of SmartThings Station

The Station is honored to be the first product to launch with Matter built in. It will be a Matter controller to integrate Matter smart home devices into your home network using any Matter compatible app including Apple Home or Google Home.

Devices need to be compatible with Matter to work with Samsung’s Station, as this is a protocol that will be standardized going forward, new products that emerge will already have the Matter logo printed on their boxes. Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home and now Samsung SmartThings are some of the big smart home platforms contracted to support Matter.

Station uses Thread technology, one of the core wireless protocols Matter is built on, along with Wi-Fi. Thread is a low-power, low-latency mesh network primarily used for low-bandwidth devices such as sensors, lighting, and blinds.

What is Matter technology?

Matter is a common language for smart home devices designed to simplify everything about the smart home, from purchase to setup and everyday use. Its biggest promise is making smart devices work with each other across platforms and ecosystems, regardless of who created them. No more checking the product box “works with” HomeKit, Google Home or Alexa – Matter devices work with them all.

price and availability

The advertised values will be $59.99 without charger and $79.99 with charger. Initially there will be two colors: White and black.

SmartThings Station will launch in the US and Korea. The device will be available in black or white from early February 2023 in the US market. No release date has yet been announced in Brazil.
