Santa Clarita taco stand owners face city lawsuit

Santa Clarita residents say Tacos Jacky is a great option for authentic street tacos.

“There were always long lines so they could serve people,” said Maribel Crispin, a local resident.

However, the city authorities filed a lawsuit against that mobile food stand, accusing them of continuing to operate illegally, despite having imposed 40 fines, for more than $17,000 that have not been paid.

Street vendors start 2023 on the right foot as a new law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom enters.

“They say we have a lot of positions when in fact we only have one position,” says Ever Hernandez, one of the Tacos Jacky’s workers, who is included in the lawsuit.

“We go to Los Angeles and they tell us that there are no permits for what we are doing. We have even wanted to rent a lunch box and they don’t give us permits either”.

Hernandez affirms that they have always taken care of the quality of the products they offer. He also points out that his multiple clients have defended them from the action of the authorities.

“Last time we had a line of about 20 people and they themselves protected us,” says Hernandez. “They didn’t take anything from us that day but they came back around 12 or 1 in the morning and they took everything from us. And we’ve been arrested twice.”

Santa Clarita city attorneys said the decision to sue came after exhausting all administrative processes to address dozens of health and safety violations.

The precautionary measure would force the street vendor to temporarily cease its operations until it meets all the standards established by the codes.

A group of street vendors have come together to find ways to protect themselves from the armed robberies that many of their colleagues have suffered in recent weeks.

“It’s not right because what they want is to work to get ahead, what I understand is that this city is racist.”

The workers of Tacos Jacky indicated that they seek legal advice to face this lawsuit.

Telemundo 52 spoke with some merchants in the area and they stated that they are not bothered by the establishment of this taco stand because they are different products and different clienteles.
