Schalke 04 have been going downhill for almost three years now. Although the Knappen have been promoted to the Bundesliga again for the current season, they are now back at the bottom of the table. On Tuesday, Thomas Reis’ team was embarrassed in the game against RB Leipzig.

The Gelsenkircheners did almost nothing in their first home game after the Bundesliga restart. Leipzig, on the other hand, chased one ball after the other into the goal, which finally made it 1:6 for Leipzig. Both Schalke captain Danny Latza and coach Reis gave a devastating verdict on the poor team performance.

Schalke coach Reis doubts Bundesliga suitability

As Reis made clear after the game, the team will have to approach the games “with a different attitude” in the future in order to score points. He also had to apologize to the audience for the “absolutely disappointing performance” of his players. He also admitted to doubting Schalke’s suitability for the Bundesliga:

“If you play like today, we have lost nothing in the Bundesliga.”

Schalke 04 captain railed against his own team

Team captain Danny Latza expressed similar frustration after the bitter defeat, according to the “West German General Newspaper“. The whole team lost all direct duels and won almost no duels, which made them “completely swam”. On top of that, he admitted that he and his team partially didn’t even know who had which opponent. A poor performance, which Latza describes as follows:

“It was desolate from everyone today.”

New signing Michael Frey from Royal Antwerp gave a similar assessment of the game to Sky. Instead of talking extensively about the defeat and the lost duels, he thinks more of learning from it, going on and working a lot. Otherwise he couldn’t say much, he would rather forget the game, so the new striker.

While Frey was already on the pitch on Tuesday, newcomer Tim Skarke from FC Union Berlin watched the debacle against Leipzig from the stands. It remains questionable whether he can turn things around in the Royal Blues in the coming days.
