Federal Development Minister Svenja Schulze (SPD) has appealed to the West not to leave the people of Sudan to their own devices, even after their own nationals have been evacuated. “What must not happen is that the West is now leaning back with relief because its own citizens are outside,” said Schulze, telling the “Rheinische Post” and the Bonn “General-Anzeiger” (Wednesday editions). “We have a responsibility to look further, stay engaged and seize every opportunity that presents itself for peace and development in Sudan.”

In the event of a military conflict, it is the duty of every state to evacuate its own citizens. However, this does not make it any easier for the Sudanese, “and I can only begin to imagine the fear there.”

In the past few days, Germany and numerous other countries had flown their nationals out of Sudan, which had been shaken by fighting between rival military forces. The Bundeswehr, which brought more than 600 Germans and citizens of other countries to safety, completed their evacuation mission in the crisis country on Tuesday evening.
