Search suspended for South Florida diver who disappeared off Bimini coast

Authorities announced Sunday that search efforts have been suspended for a South Florida diver who has gone missing off Bimini, Bahamas, since Friday.

Ryan Proulx was last seen snorkeling about half a mile offshore. Friends said they had not been able to find him and that his wife was helping with the search efforts.

On Thursday he had left with eight other people in two boats from a marina in Palm Beach County.

The Bahamas Department of Defense was handling the search along with the United States Coast Guard Sector Seven, but this Sunday all was called off after a lengthy search for several miles of coastline.

Proulx, 31, was from Connecticut, where he had been a police officer in East Hartford from 2017 to 2021, before becoming a sea captain in South Florida.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the Proulx family,” Lt. Matt Spado, Coast Guard liaison officer, said in a post on Twitter. “The decision to suspend active search efforts pending further development is something we never took as likely.”
