According to actress Selma Blair, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, her illness went undetected by doctors for decades despite the loss of control over her own body.

LONDON – Selma Blair (“Legally Blonde”), who suffers from multiple sclerosis, opens up about the special effect her cane has on her. “As soon as I hold it in my hand, my voice and my body calm down,” says the 50-year-old American in an interview with the fashion magazine “Vogue”. That’s why she has an emotional and physical attachment to the stick, she calls it an “extension of me”.

The cane should not only help her, but also create visibility: “I think that representation is important. If I can help remove the stigma or over-curiosity in a crowd for someone else, that’s great.” She also believes that many younger people have started showing their sticks in public.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a nervous system disease that causes inflammation in the spinal cord and brain. Blair made her MS diagnosis public in 2018. For decades, her illness remained undetected by doctors, despite the loss of control over her own body. “If you’re a boy with these symptoms, you get an MRI. As a girl, you’re called “crazy,” she said of her late diagnosis.

Nonetheless, Blair managed to make a career in Hollywood, starring in films such as One or One and Hellboy, among others. dpa
