Senate Majority Leader Releases Long-Awaited Plan to Regulate Artificial Intelligence

WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will unveil his long-awaited strategy for regulating artificial intelligence in a speech Wednesday detailing steps Congress can take to stay ahead of fast-moving technology.

The New York Democrat will speak about the benefits of AI, from fighting disease to making American lives easier and more efficient. But he, too, will join the chorus of tech experts warning of its potential dangers, which include massive workforce disruptions, disinformation campaigns and election interference.

In his keynote address at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Schumer will launch what he calls his “SAFE Innovation” framework and call for an “all hands on deck approach” to AI.

“Congress cannot behave like ostriches in the sand when it comes to AI. Some might think it’s better to ignore this problem or wait for someone else to solve it because it’s so complex, but ignoring AI is untenable for Congress,” Schumer said in a speech on the floor Tuesday in anticipation of his comments.
