In recent months, five congressmen have resigned from their seats and some of them are seeking to run as candidates in the territorial elections to be held in October 2023. The former presidential candidate and former governor of Antioquia Sergio Fajardo He stated on his social networks that these actions correspond to “cheating” and even equated it to an act of corruption.

“If a congressman resigns from his seat in Congress to run for office as mayor or governor he’s cheating”Fajardo commented in a video posted on Twitter. According to the Antioquia politician, in other times these actions were known as “little games”, but really “it is a trap and the trap is a form of corruption.”

For Sergio Fajardothis type of situation explains why “the Congress of the Republic has such discredit”. Following this, he affirmed that citizens do not believe in the political system “because they never clearly see what is intended” and, like the legislators who have left their seats, they end up changing “the rules according to their whim”.

The congressmen who departed from the Legislative: Rodolfo Hernández, from the League of Anti-Corruption Governors, who is once again running for the Santander Governorate; Berner Zambrano, the senator who seeks to be governor of Nariño, and Yamil Arana, the representative to the Chamber who would aspire to the same position in the department of Bolívar.

The other two cases that drew attention correspond to a representative of the Chamber Alfredo Ape Cuello, who reportedly presented his resignation letter, but the corporation did not respond to him, and to the senator of the Historical Pact, Gustavo Bolívar. The latter worked until December 31, 2022 and now he will dedicate himself to writing novels and scripts for television, although at the time it was speculated that he would launch into the Mayor of Bogota.

In context: One step aside: Senator Gustavo Bolívar resigned from his seat

Fajardo indicated that these resignations go against what is really wanted in politics: “that it be clean, that it be transparent, that each one answer for our actions and that would not be done by a resigning congressman.” Likewise, he predicted that this “vividness” helps some to shield themselves and justify their decisions, but “it always ends badly (…) because it always leads to the world of corruption”.
