Sheriff: Offender Throws Himself into Fresno Canal to Escape Police

FRESNO, California – A suspect who was loitering in the Dudley Avenues area with Valentine ended up fleeing authorities by jumping into a canal. After resisting arrest he was eventually pulled from the water and booked into the county jail.

Shortly after 10:00 a.m. Thursday, a homeowner reported to authorities that a strange man was walking through his backyard.

“He jumped fences and entered the yards of other owners,” authorities say in a statement.

The man, later identified as Shawn Foster, dove into the water channel and began to float down the river.

In his attempt to continue to escape authorities, the individual refused to be rescued when American Ambulance firefighters and paramedics arrived to assist him.

They threw a bag attached to a rope for him to hold on to, but he continued to resist, adds the Fresno County Sheriff’s spokesman.

Rescuers were able to pull him out of the water near Chateau Fresno and Belmont Avenue in the Pratton area.

Shawn Foster, 41, was not injured, was taken into custody and booked into the Fresno County Jail for violating probation, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest.
