Shigeru Miyamoto would have rejected an evil version of the Princess peach in the style of wario Y waluigiproposed by the veteran developer of Nintendo, camelot. In recent years, Nintendo has been reluctant to add more new characters to the universe of Marioor even modifications of existing characters.
Now, according to a 2017 interview with Nintendo producer Kensuke Tanabe. The rejection of an “evil version” of Peach suggests that Nintendo’s close watch on its characters could have been hanging around Nintendo’s offices for much longer.
Camelot is a game developer founded in 1990. Camelot worked on 12 games in the Shining series for various Sega consoles before signing on to develop the original Mario Golf for the Nintendo 64.
To this day, Camelot remains one of Nintendo’s go-to developers for Mario-related sports games, having also developed several Mario Tennis titles. Camelot’s most recent release was Mario Golf: Super Rush in 2021.
Wario was created for Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, released on the original Game Boy in 1992. The success of Wario led Camelot to develop Waluigi a few years later for Mario Tennis, originally released on the Nintendo 64.
The character was an instant hit, and Camelot co-founder Shugo Takahashi tried to capitalize on Waluigi’s success by proposing to Miyamoto another alternate version of another character from the Mario universe, Princess Peach.
The idea of ”evil Peach” was scrapped by Miyamoto for two reasons, according to Twitter user @gosokkyu, who discovered the 2008 interview with Takahashi. The first was that he thought the character’s design wouldn’t be appealing.
Second, according to Takahashi, Miyamoto said that any character design he came up with for Camelot would end up looking too much like Doronjo, a female character from the popular Yatterman anime series. It is unclear if Miyamoto ever saw the design for an evil Peach.
Takahashi defended himself by adding that the design bore little resemblance to Doronjo, but was inspired by dark fallen-angel-style characters common in anime and manga. This must have been too Doronjo-like for Miyamoto’s liking, so he turned it down.
