The riot was armed in the Senate. On the afternoon of this April 27, the fight broke out in the Senate for the INAI… but don’t think that a couple of screams: there were slaps, shoves, they took the rostrum, they blew up the session and well.

Well, what happened if there was already an agreement? Have you already named the new INAI commissioner that is needed? Let’s go in parts…

They are fighting in the Senate for the INAI

Tremendous shock that was assembled in the plenary session of the Senate this April 27 when they tried to elect the new commissioner of INAI (National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data).

But how did it all start? Well, this Thursday morning, the coordinator of the Morena bench in the Senate, Ricardo Monreal, announced to the press that there was already a agreement within Morena and with two opposition parties to name a new INAI commissioner.

This would allow the INAI to have 5 commissioners and could meet after several weeks on hiatus.

Be careful with this. The senator said that instead of launching the 3 candidates, they asked him to only push one for less fatigue. He says that not to start the lawsuit and not to impose he went for the best qualified candidate without knowing who it was.

At the same time that this became known and the rumors began, the president of the Senate, the Morenista Alejandro Armenta Mier, launched an initiative to give the INAI a neck and replace it with the Secretariat of Public Function (SFP). Then he repented, lowered the initiative and explained that he had been confused, that he really wanted to propose that the Institute be absorbed by the Superior Audit Office of the Federation (ASF).

Later, Monreal confirmed that the rooster they were going to launch for the vote for the new INAI commissioner it would be Ricardo Salgado, who is a current official of the National Anti-Corruption System. And the whole matter was almost sung until the voting began.

3/5 of the senators were needed to approve the new appointment, 110 votes were cast but there were 67 votes against and only 43 in favor, so the votes were not enough and there was no appointment.

Who voted against? It turns out that Morena and allies, so the whole thing blew up. The opposition then jumped in, spread a canvas and took the platform to claim that Morena did not comply with the agreement that already existed and to demand that a new INAI commissioner be elected now.

The opposition demanded, between shoves and shouts, the president of the Board of Directors, Armenta Mier, to end the session, but the legislator insisted on continuing with the next point. There are several videos that captured the moment when César Cravioto, from Morena, he lets go with his hands while the legislators below clung to the canvas. A real circus.

In the Senate there were women members of collectives that were waiting for the analysis of the initiative on the 3 of 3 against violence. It seems that they tried to use them to pressure the PAN to continue with the session, but they did not give up and began to demand transparency and 3 out of 3.

This is how the journalist Leti Robles De la Rosa captured it on her Twitter account. The issue is that later they asked them to leave, so the collective announced that not only were they not going to leave, but they were going to stay to sleep in the Senate because “they are not currency“.

And since the protests of the collectives and the opposition in the stands did not subside, the president had no choice but to end the session and make an appointment for tomorrow. The thing is that the matter did not end there and continued outside, in the press conferences by parties.

The opposition announced that They are not going to allow the session to continue until they appoint an INAI commissioner and even Senator Xóchitl Gálvez affirmed that they will keep the rostrum occupied until Sunday if necessary.

It is not valid that 67 votes were against the proposal. That is a matter that is a mockery, because they are going to make fun of others, because we are not going to allow it, and we will continue here because INAI first“, said the deputy Julen Rementeria, coordinator of the PAN in the Senate.

The opposition as a whole said that they were ready to meet at night, so they are not going to leave until an agreement is reached and a new commissioner is voted in. They even asked the collectives not to leave.

For her part, the bench of Morena and allies They accused the opposition of violence to break up the session, asked them to continue with the program and affirmed that they complied with the agreement made by Ricardo Monreal. He says that the agreement was to vote for the new commissioner and they did that, but the PAN did not like the vote.

They affirmed that if the opposition does not want to leave the rostrum and continue with the session then they will to analyze sitting in another place, as has happened before.

But didn’t Monreal say that there was already an ironed agreement? A few days ago, in a jolt, Senator Ricardo Monreal admitted that he was already losing his lead because sometimes they no longer listened to him, but to the candidates for the presidency by early succession.
