Because of the overflow of the Shabelle River in Somaliawhich flooded the Hiran region and surroundings, 22 personas lost their lives and more than 200,000 They had to leave their homes.

After suffering an unusual drought that left much of the population in economic trouble, tragedy struck Somalia on Sunday when flash floods endangered citizens, submerging roads as well as destroying family homes and farmland.

“First estimates indicate that flash and river floods in Somalia affected at least 460,470 people, of whom almost 219,000 had to leave their homes and 22 died,” authorities said, Télam reported.

The main points affected by the heavy rains are Hirshabelle and Jubaland, where the floods caused the temporary closure of schools and a health center. Despite the damage caused by the catastrophe, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) pointed out that “the rains are recharging surface water sources and allowing vegetation to regenerate, which is important for the human and livestock survival” after the worst drought in four decades.
