Sony brings the previous Playstation exclusive game “Returnal” to the PC. The PC port of the action game was announced in December, and now the planned release date is February 15th. For the PC version, port developer Climax Studios has incorporated several technical improvements.

According to one Sony blog post the PC version supports both Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR. If desired, both techniques upscale lower resolutions in order to enable a sharper image without major losses in performance. Many modern games at 4K resolution overwhelm most available graphics cards and require upscaling technology to run at 4K with a stable frame rate.

Ray tracing has also been expanded: the PS5 game already supports ray tracing shadows, the PC version also gets ray tracing reflections. New to the PC version are expanded resolution options, including ultrawide 21:9 and 32:9 formats.

Sony has also published the system requirements for the PC version of “Returnal”: If you want to play in 4K resolution, you need 32 GB of RAM. “Returnal” requires 60 GB of storage space on the hard drive or SSD. “Returnal” was developed by the Finnish studio Housemarque and is one of the first titles that came onto the market exclusively for the Playstation 5, i.e. no longer served the PS4. The game launched to positive reviews and is one of the most visually stunning titles for the Playstation.

Sony was also apparently impressed: in the summer of 2021, the Playstation manufacturer bought developer Housemarque. “Housemarque has unleashed its creativity over the years in a variety of Playstation games that have consistently demonstrated the power of our hardware,” said Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. “The addition of Housemarque to Playstation Studios underscores our commitment to nurturing the best development teams in the industry and delivering new experiences only found on the Playstation platform.”

In recent years, Sony has ported more and more of its once strictly guarded Playstation exclusive titles to the PC. In addition to the “Spider-Man” games, this also includes “God of War”, “Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves” and “Horizon Zero Dawn”.
