At least ten people died and 40 others were injured in a tanker truck explosion in South Africa yesterday. According to rescue workers, the tanker truck filled with LPG liquefied gas was first stuck under a bridge near several residential buildings and a hospital in Boksburg, east of the city of Johannesburg.
A fire then broke out in the truck. When the fire brigade arrived to put out the flames, the truck exploded, said a spokesman for the rescue services.
According to him, half of the 40 injured are in critical condition after the explosion. 15 were seriously injured but stable. The driver of the tanker was injured and taken to the hospital, but no information was initially given about the fatalities of the explosion.
A huge fireball was seen under the bridge on videos on social networks. The tanker truck was obviously too big to cross the bridge. The vehicle, coming from south-east South Africa, was loaded with 60,000 liters of LPG liquefied gas, which is mainly used in the country for cooking and gas stoves.
