South Florida faces a weekend of rain and wind

MIAMI.- The south of the Florida is under the effect of a bad weather system that has brought rains intense and winds strong at least since Thursday, after which there have been floodspower outages and high waves in coastal areas.

According to the National Weather Service, weather conditions are expected to gradually improve starting Sunday, but a flood watch was still in effect for the counties of Miami-Dade, Broward y Palm Beach.

The severe weather system is associated with a low pressure trough extending from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic, causing a strong easterly wind current that affects southern Florida.

Wind gusts have reached up to 60 mph in some areas, causing trees and branches to fall onto power lines.

According to reports, more than 3,000 customers were without power on Saturday. This Sunday, around 400 power outages were still reported, according to the Florida Power & Light company.

Las rains have been torrential at times, exceeding 6 inches in 24 hours in Miami y Fort Lauderdale. This has caused canals to overflow and water to accumulate in the streets, which has brought difficulties in traffic and public transportation.

The waves have also been very high, with records of up to 9 inches on the southern beaches of the Florida. This contingency has caused coastal erosion and has forced some access to the sea to be closed for safety.

The authorities recommended bathers and boaters to avoid contact with the water, since rip currents can be generated that put human life at risk.

Government relief and prevention entities have asked the population to take precautions and stay informed of the evolution of the climate. The severe weather system is expected to move away from the region on Monday, ushering in drier, cooler weather.
