The President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeolpardoned the former president on Tuesday Lee Myung-bakwho had been sentenced to 17 years in prison for the alleged crimes of embezzlement Y bribes.

The South Korean leader has previously granted presidential pardons, including to Samsung Electronics CEO Lee Jae-yong. As well as the former governor of South Gyeongsang province, Kim Kyoung-soo and other opposition politicians.

According to the AFP agency, this is the second since the leader took office in May, which will be effective as of this Wednesday, according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

Former President Lee Myung-bak, 81, had been sentenced to 17 years in prison for bribery and embezzlement, but this sentence was suspended due to chronic illness.

Now, the pardon eliminates the remaining 15 years of his sentence and thus becomes the fourth ex-president to receive a pardon. Lee served as the Korean Executive from 2008 to 2013, whose Administration was marked by tensions with North Korea.

The corruption charges against the leader stemmed from an investigation into his brother’s car company, through which the president was able to profit while in office, Bloomberg reports.

The next pardon is for former Governor Kim Kyoung-soo, a prominent political figure and close to former President Moon Jae-In, whose two-year sentence for opinion manipulation was set to expire in May 2023.

The rest of the pardons went to Kim Ki-choon, former President Park Geun-hye’s chief of staff; former Finance Minister Choi Kyoung-hwan; former directors of the National Intelligence Service Nam Jae-joon, Lee Byung-kee and Lee Byong-ho; and former Presidential Senior Secretary for Political Affairs Jun Byung-hun.
