EHeld up as a symbol, as a spokesperson for the feminist movement, or as the embodiment of evil for its detractors, Irene Montero is completing a key year in which she has brought forward innovative bills, against all odds.

Like many of the members of her radical left party Podemos, Irene Montero (Madrid, 1988) entered politics at a young age, she came from social activism and assumes her outspokenness as well as her ideas. Elected MP in 2016, she became Minister for Equality four years later during the first government coalition in the country’s history formed by the Socialist Party (PSOE) and Podemos. At the time, the approval of several feminist laws during the legislature was a condition of this government agreement.
