Juarez City.- The noises of the birds are heard meters from the entrance of the San Jorge Recreation Center, later, some howls are lost among six sheds that house 350 animals, including birds, reptiles and mammals.

The zoo opened its doors 20 years ago, with the purpose of protecting and conserving the animals, an example to be replicated in the new generations, according to Arturo Silva Villafuerte, manager of the zoo area.

In the first corridor you can see blue, white and black peacocks, pheasants, cockatoos, parrots and ducks.

In another reptile area there is a space for the Moreletii crocodiles to rest, and the water turtles have a place with pools, and for the land turtles a kind of caves were installed to protect them.

The largest section is where mammals are concentrated, a place where tigers, panthers and lions live, the latter are sheltered in a kind of chamber where it was protected with level five security glass, Silva Villafuerte said.

Bison, llamas, camels, donkeys, bears, elephants, and chimpanzees can all be seen resting or eating in safe, open-air roosts.

Surrounded by green nature, the 67 species of animals live sharing the shade of 2,500 trees such as pine, palm, moor, blackberry, walnut, poplar, ash, fig and various fruit trees, Silva said, as a white peacock extended its plumage.

For about an hour, you will be able to appreciate the variety of animals that live there, some of which were rescued from three circuses, Silva said.

“In October 2022, after a 20-day trip, from the Black Jaguar White Tiger sanctuary, in Ajusco -Mexico City-, two tigresses arrived in deplorable conditions due to animal abuse, today, they are currently cared for and we adapted drinking fountains, heaters, and above all a play area and one of them is one month pregnant, and the other in 100 percent favorable conditions,” said the zoo manager.

He explained that the zoo has three objectives: to protect exotic animals with space, food and health; reproduce them, because it is also animal abuse to have only one, and for the purpose of recreation.

“The most important is recreation, and what is recreation? Seeing with our own eyes what we like so much, and that is mainly for children, because there is not a single one who does not like animals, they love them , and above all that coming to the zoo helps them to discover if they want to dedicate themselves to some branch of zoology”, explained Silva Villafuerte, as she concluded the one-hour tour of the zoo.

The facilities also have a reserve of water, food, grain and other food, said Arturo Silva.

The recreational area has a total of approximately twelve hectares, two of which were destined for the exhibition of animals; In addition, there is a cistern that has a capacity to store 20,000 liters of water to supply pets and the nine pools that the park has, said Porfirio Silva, head of the recreation center.

There are a total of thirty people who attend the center, and twelve who are in charge of the zoo, among which are 3 veterinarians and workers who already have up to 30 years in the care of animals, said the person in charge of the recreation.

The place is located at Mariano Abasolo street, 1016, in El Sauzal, Bravos District, and it opens every day from 10:00 in the morning to 6:00 in the afternoon.

The entrance has a cost of 100 pesos per person, and 120 to enter the pool, they also have VIP passes for 180 pesos that include both services, Porfirio mentioned.

Goals:

Protect them with space, food and health, reproduce them, because it is also mistreatment to have only one, and another very important thing, recreation…
