The naturally dark starry sky over the North Sea islands of Spiekeroog and Pellworm is increasingly attracting stargazers. Around a year and a half after the two islands in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein were officially International Dark Sky Association (IDA) were recognized as Germany’s first star islands, tourism professionals register a great deal of interest among holidaymakers.

New benches for stargazers on Pellworm

The number of requests for holidays with a star background has definitely increased after the certification. At the moment, Pellworm is in the process of building a “Starkieker” base. For example, there was a three-day “Star Kieker training course” that was aimed at landlords, restaurateurs, mud flats and tourist guides, among others. “From next season there will finally be benches on Pellworm where you can comfortably watch the stars,” says Bursch.
Such observation sites already exist on Spiekeroog. The starry sky can be observed particularly well in spring and autumn when the days are not too long, said Grucza.
On the islands, lanterns have been replaced with shielded lights or the brightness has been significantly dimmed. The measures were a prerequisite for recognition as a star island. Measurements by experts showed that both islands are among the darkest places in Germany at night. (dpa)
