US President Joe Biden has threatened those responsible for the violence in Sudan with sanctions. The President today signed an executive order allowing sanctions against those “who threaten the peace, security and stability of Sudan,” according to the White House.

Punitive measures are also possible against those who “undermine Sudan’s democratic transition, use violence against civilians or commit serious human rights violations”.

“The violence in Sudan is a tragedy – and it is a betrayal of the clear demand of the Sudanese people for civilian government and a transition to democracy,” Biden said. “It must end.”

The presidential decree expands existing sanction options with a view to Sudan. Concrete new sanctions have not been imposed for the time being.

Fighting between the Sudanese army under the command of military ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF militia led by General Mohammed Hamdan Daglo has been going on for 20 days. According to the non-governmental organization Acled, more than 700 people have been killed in the fighting, mostly in the capital Khartoum and in the Darfur region. Several ceasefires were broken by the parties to the conflict.
