A World War II bomb was discovered and defused in Herne on Thursday. Surprise: more duds were found during the search.

On Thursday, May 4th, a dud from the Second World War was found in the Eickel sports park in the Wanne-Süd district of Herne. The bomb had to be defused on the same day.

6 p.m.: The dud from the Second World War, which was discovered in front of the grandstand in the stadium in the sports park, has been defused. The city reports. All blocking measures are lifted with immediate effect. The explosive device was discovered during routine investigations, as work to renew the tartan track is pending in the stadium. Surprise: Two more duds were found at this point and taken away. However, these had not had a detonator, so it was not necessary to defuse them.






17.10 a.m.: The people who have their homes and apartments within the restricted area around where the dud was found in the stadium have now been evacuated, according to the city. The defusing of the ordnance can now begin. Nine people had to rely on help when leaving their homes. And: Six people would use the contact point in the European School.


16.30 o’clock: Several World War II bombs were recently defused in Wanne-Süd. In 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022 duds had to be defused in the district, most recently in November 2022 and March 2022 even at the same place, i.e. also in the stadium in the sports park. The first time the bomb was discovered at the level of the center circle, most recently in the penalty area. Where she was found this time, the city only wants to reveal after the defusing.

3.50 p.m.: The city announced that evacuation measures have now begun around the location of the dud in the stadium in the sports park. Around 260 people now have to leave their houses and apartments for the defusing. As soon as the area is reported as free, the actual defusing can begin.

2.50 p.m.: The Heisterkamp reports: Because of the bomb disposal, the children, youth and cultural center “Der Heisterkamp” at Heisterkamp 62 must remain closed this Thursday. Only on Friday does the house open again from 4 p.m. for teenagers and from 6 p.m. for young people.

2:12 p.m.: The defusing begins as soon as the residents have left the restricted area. According to the city, it is not possible to predict when the defusing and thus the blocking measure will last.

1.30 p.m.: The city of Herne is setting up a contact point in the Europaschule primary school, Königstraße 25, for people who do not know of any other place to stay for the duration of the blocking measure. The administration has set up a hotline for this on 02323 16-93 20.

1:25 p.m.: The city of Herne has set up a restricted zone. People living in this area have to leave their homes.

1:15 p.m: The city of Herne announced that a dud was discovered during investigations into explosive ordnance in the stadium in the Eickel sports park. The British 250-kilogram bomb from the Second World War is to be defused later in the afternoon. The investigation was carried out routinely because work to renew the tartan track is imminent in the stadium. Since there are many green and sports areas as well as an allotment garden in the vicinity of the site, only very few people would have to leave their houses and apartments for the defusing. A total of around 260 people are affected. The evacuation is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
