Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a disease that affects about 30% of the Brazilian population, according to data from the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC). One of the risk factors for this health problem is aging, but young people and children can also have high blood pressure.

Cardiologist Antônio Machado Netto, from the Dr.Consulta network of clinics, warns of the importance of periodic check-ups that include pressure assessments. According to the database of the network of clinics, women represent 74.2% of those who scheduled appointments with cardiologists, while men accounted for 25.8%. In the same period, of the total number of hypertension diagnoses, 78.5% were made in women and 21.5% in men.

“The difference in diagnoses happens because they are more cautious in relation to their own health. Old-age women statistically have more hypertension than men in the same age group, but they have the advantage of taking better care of their health and visiting the doctor more regularly, which helps with treatment and prevention,” explains the cardiologist. .

In women, the prevalence of high blood pressure increases significantly after the age of 50, the change is related to menopause, when there is a drop in the hormone estrogen.

In addition and the greater frequency of them in consultations, there are suspicions that the use of the contraceptive pill, as well as obesity, sedentary lifestyle, stress, fatty food and high salt content, are contributing to the growth of diagnoses of high blood pressure among women. .

Netto points out that hypertension is silent, but it gives signs such as: dizziness, shortness of breath, palpitations, frequent headaches and changes in vision. “In most cases, the disease has no cure, but it can be controlled. In addition, the treatment is not always with the use of medication, sometimes it is enough to adhere to a healthy lifestyle, ”he says.
