Known for previous acts of violence with weapons, this retired train driver, of French nationality, was arrested shortly after the incident and placed in police custody.
“He was silent, as they say. I didn’t really like it because I liked him expressing himself, but he was really withdrawn. He didn’t live like everyone else,” said his father, 90, with messy gray hair and a dark dressing gown. “This morning, he didn’t say anything when he left (…) He’s crazy. He is crazy,” he added.
A racist shooting in the heart of Paris
The facts took place on rue d’Enghien, near a Kurdish cultural center, in a lively shopping district popular with the Kurdish community.
According to the Minister of the Interior, who went to the scene in the afternoon, the shooter wanted “obviously to attack foreigners”.
Of this possible motivation, “we never talked about it (…) He said nothing. He must have been planning his thing on his own, ”assumed the suspect’s father on Friday at the start of the afternoon.
The suspect was released from prison on December 12, after being imprisoned for acts of premeditated racist violence and degradation, committed in December 2021 in Paris.
