Lukrainian police say they have uncovered 25 torture camps in the region surrounding the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv since its liberation from Russian occupation. In particular, civilians have been detained in inhumane conditions and tortured in these camps by Russian soldiers, police said on Facebook on Monday. Some prisoners reportedly received electric shocks and others had their fingers broken.

The area surrounding Kharkiv has been occupied by Russian troops for months. They only withdrew at the beginning of September, after a Ukrainian counter-offensive. Since then, 920 remains of civilians, including those of 25 children, have been discovered in the area, police added. The victims were reportedly killed by Russian soldiers.

According to investigations carried out by the Ukrainian authorities, Russian troops also committed war crimes in other occupied territories, such as in Boutcha, on the outskirts of kyiv, where the bodies of more than 400 people were found after their withdrawal. Most of them showed signs of violent death. The investigation is ongoing.
