As a newscaster, Schreiber deals a lot with political issues. But when the topics are shaped by political and ideological debates in private, it becomes too much for him.

Hamburg – “Tagesschau” spokesman and author Constantin Schreiber considers too many political and ideological debates in private conversations to be a problem. “You can no longer escape from politics,” said Schreiber in an interview with the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (weekend edition).

“Haven’t you noticed that yet? That today every topic – sports, culture, nutrition, travel, entertainment – is shaped by political and ideological debates? That no matter what you talk about, you are constantly being evaluated and sorted? People rave about a visit to the museum, but someone counters that the exhibition is problematic because it only shows art by men.”

More serenity required

Of course, people should deal with politics, said the journalist and publicist. “Nevertheless, political issues shouldn’t constantly sneak into our most private moments. There must also be interruptions.”

You always have to “behave about something” through social media, said the 43-year-old. He pleads for more serenity. “People become more sympathetic when you get to know them as individuals and not just as a reflection of political attitudes.”

Schreiber has been spokesman for “Tagesschau” since January 2021, and he has published several books as an author, most recently the non-fiction book “Glück im Unglück – How I remain optimistic despite bad news”. He lives in Hamburg with his wife and two children. dpa
