Texas man dies in national park he was visiting to spread his father's ashes

SALT LAKE CITY – A Texas man who He was found dead in one of Utah’s major national parks.was at the scene in an attempt to spread his father’s ashes.

James Bernard Hendricks, 66, of Austin, Texas, went missing on August 1 and his body was found shortly after in a parking lot near a trailhead in Arches National Park, located in a desert north of Moab.

Authorities believe the man likely died of heat stroke. Near his body, his empty water bottle was found.

Reports indicate that temperatures exceeded 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the area before the Texas man was reported missing.

In a post on social media, the same victim had commented that she was going to stop in Utah to spread her father’s ashes while traveling to the Sierra Nevada region and California.

The National Park Service and the Grand County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death, according to The Associated Press.
