The big absentees from the list of nominees for the Oscars 2024

Below, we present the major absences in the nominees for the Oscar 2024.

The snub to Greta Gerwing

If there was one thing we thought we knew before the Oscar nominations, it was that Gerwig was obviously going to be nominated for directing. Barbie. Her film was the rarest of things, a critically praised original box-office hit (about a female character) that became the highest-grossing film of the year by a wide margin and was a legitimate cultural phenomenon.

Gerwig was previously nominated for best director for Lady Bird, and that it was not nominated by Little Woman It was also a slight.

Unfortunately, many are likely to point to French director Justine Triet as Anatomy of a fall (Anatomy of a each) for taking Gerwig’s place, but let’s not pit two great directors against each other.

If it’s any consolation to Gerwig, directors of last year’s blockbusters were also left out of this category: not even James Cameron of Avatar: The Way of Water (Avatar: The Way of Water) and Joseph Kosinski Top Gun: Maverick were nominated.

Disappointment to the African American community

Even with his years of service to the academy, Origin by Ava DuVernay was completely overlooked, and is especially disappointing because of Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor’s stellar performance as Isabel Wilkerson.

It’s no secret that the Oscars have a bad track record with African-American female directors: do you remember last year how The Woman King (The king woman) by Gina Prince-Bythewood was also excluded?

Selma (Selma: the power of a dream), by DuVernay, remains the only nominee for best film directed by an African-American woman. And Halle Berry will continue to be the only black African American to win the best actress award for another year, since Fantasia Barrino, from The Color Purple (The color purple), was also left without a nomination.

Charles Melton is also not listed

Someone tell Charles Melton’s mom to make a batch of his kimchi ASAP.

The actor of May December (Secrets of a scandal) was not nominated for his heartbreaking performance as the unwitting victim of the sexual abuse of an older woman.

The surprise inclusion in this category was Sterling K. Brown for American Fiction. A May December It did not do well at all, earning only one nomination for screenwriter Samy Burch.

With Amrica Ferrara, but without Margot

The chaos of Barbie It didn’t stop with Gerwig’s exclusion from the best director category.

Margot Robbie is not among the best actress nominees Tuesday morning, but her co-star America Ferrera, who delivers the film’s famous monologue, was nominated for supporting actress.

Robbie did get a nomination, but as a producer in the best film category.

Dian Warren does it again

It wouldn’t be the Oscars without a nomination for Diane Warren.

The composer obtained her 15th nomination, this time for The Fire Inside of Flamin’ Hot (Flamin’ Hot: The flavor that changed history). Although he has now received an honorary scar, Warren has yet to win a competitive statuette.

This is not likely to be his year either, as he will face two giants of Barbie: I’m Just Ken y What Was I Made For. Oscar rules state that only two original songs from the same film can be nominated, which means that Dance the Night Away of Dua Lipa was the unfortunate exclusion of Barbie.

Neither leaves nor fire

The international feature film category always leaves a bittersweet taste, but this year it hurt a little more: Aki Kaurismki’s acclaimed romantic comedy with dry humor Dead leaves (autumn leaves) seemed like a shoo-in for the Oscars, but she didn’t get any nominations on Tuesday.

He is in good company with the French candidate The passion of Dodin Bouffant (To simmer), which was also excluded. Many thought it was crazy that France chose that film over Anatomy of a fall (Anatomy of a each), which was rewarded with four nominations in other categories, including director and film.

Past lives flake

In a morning version of the nominations, Past Lives (Past Lives) could have been among the top six nominees, but Celine Song’s elegant romance only got two, for screenplay and best picture.

Aside from Song being passed over for direction, the biggest snub goes to Greta Lee’s magnificent and moving lead performance.

Game Over for Mario

Oh no, Mario! The Super Mario Bros. (Super Mario Bros., the movie), the second highest-grossing film of the year, was completely left out of the nominations, including animated feature film.

We knew that Bowser’s Ballad to Princess Peach hadn’t made the shortlist for the original song, but it’s pretty surprising that it wasn’t at least among the best animated films.

Perhaps the unexpected element of chaos here was Robot Dreams by Neon, a Cannes acquisition that has not yet been released in the United States.

Less stellar short films

The Almodvar/Anderson duel in the short film category has just been annulled.

Pedro Almodvar was not nominated for his short film starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke Strange Way of Life (Extra forma de vida), which makes the category a little less stellar.

Wes Anderson, who has never won an Oscar, did get a nomination for his short film based on a story by Roald Dahl. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (The wonderful story of Henry Sugar). With this, Anderson has eight nominations.

Salburn falls apart

We really don’t think that Saltburn by Emerald Fennell would make a big splash in the morning nominations, but had been trending based on its popularity on Prime Video during the year-end holidays.

It’s time to listen Murder on the Dance Floor by Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Clothing optional.
