Scott Derrickson’s adaptation of The Black Phone was one of last year’s most positive surprises in the horror genre. Sure, it had its flaws and the child actors left a lot to be desired. But Ethan Hawke dominated as the sadistic killer. Here at Gamerector, it got a solid sixth and in cinemas it brought in 1.6 billion kroner on a budget corresponding to a fraction of that sum. Perhaps it is not particularly surprising then that Blumhouse is currently working on a sequel.

This was confirmed during CinemaCon by Jason Blum himself and the big question now is just what direction the film will take. The Grabber is dead, which leaves Finney and Gwen to take the story forward. Maybe they’ve grown up and Gwen has managed to refine her supernatural abilities. An alternative possibility would also have been if the sequel maintains the concept but skips the characters to instead focus on other individuals who are in life-threatening situations.

What do you think about a sequel to The Black Phone. Should the story build on Finney and Gwen or focus on new characters?

“Hello? I just wanted to call and complain, my phone is not black at all”
